There are plenty of link lists out there that are no more
than that: Undifferentiated lists of hyperlinks. We would like to give
the visitor (that's you) a bit more than that, so we have reduced
the number of links to those we genuinely think are the most useful and
we have added brief annotations. If there's a web site you think
is a special stand-out, we'd sure like to know about it. . . . Meanwhile,
enjoy!
Cyndi's Genealogy
Sites on the Internet is the most important jumping-off point you
can find. You almost don't have to know about any other genealogy site
except this one. Cyndi provides you with more than 22,000
carefully organized, usually annotated, constantly updated links in 70
categories, major and minor, to every subject and related topic any
genealogist can imagine!
The
Genealogy Calendar is a continually updated register of upcoming
events in the family history world, including regular local society meetings,
classes and workshops, the air times of local genealogy radio shows, and
so on. Links to state and local society homepages also are included where
they exist. Every organization with any Net-awareness at all keeps its
listings up-to-date here and you can browse or search it chronologically
or geographically.
Almost certainly, the most important new use of the Net by
and for genealogists is the U.S.
GenWeb Project –– and it's only about a year and a half old. Think
of a separate web site devoted to every single county in every state, with
relevant queries posted by other visitors, bibliographies of useful books,
a capsule history of the county written by a local expert, the names and
the e-mail and snailmail addresses of the County Clerk, the local library,
and the genealogical or historical society, and links to the web pages
of other researchers who are interested in that same county . . . and the
project is quickly becoming international, too!
Matt Helm's Genealogy
Toolbox is busily evolving from just-another-personal-page into
a full-service genealogist's jumpstation. Of particular interest, this
site includes The Journal of Online Genealogy, an important monthly
publication devoted to new Net resources and research methods.
Now hosted by the Ancestry corporate site, Dick
Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter is a weekly publication not
to be missed. Dick has been doing genealogy with computers, first on CompuServe
and then on the Net, longer than almost anyone –– and if he
doesn't know about it, it probably ain't happenin'. Read
it! Better yet, be lazy and subscribe to it by e-mail!
